The Lost Canyons are dry and rough, a rather harsh territory. The canyons begin at the edge of the Southern Arcano Mountains, spreading east until they even out into the Flatlands. Thin, twisting ravines branch of the main canyon, where the Castovar River runs from west to east. After carving away at the mountains for millions of years, the river has worn a wide path through the rock, creating steep red sides and a twisting labyrinth of sandstone. If one sticks to the river, a horse can make it through to the other side, where the Flatlands begin. Exploring or wandering, however, is quite likely to kill anyone who doesn't know the canyons by heart. The Castovar Path, which runs right next to the river and goes clear through the canyons, is the easiest way through. Other, less known paths can be used, if the horse knows the way. Grass can be found along the river and the smaller streams, and even a few cottonwood trees as well. Underneath the scorching sun, coyotes and cougars wander. Although coyotes are not a threat, cougars can easily kill a horse. Patrolled vigorously by the Reyano Herd, this land has been claimed as part of their homeland, and trespassers will not be tolerated. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This territory is part of the Reyano Herd homeland, and trespassers will not be tolerated.*Dangers: Cougars, heat, dehydration, fatigue, getting lost* When it comes to meeting a predator, the player can chose the outcome. Please keep in mind that lone horses will be vulnerable to predators, while groups will have a better chance of escaping unharmed. When a predator targets a harem of horses, they will seek to separate the weak and young. If your horse is young, old, or injured, be aware they will be likely to be targeted unless defended. Please keep all interactions with predators realistic. No horse can escape every encounter unharmed.

"Fate loves the fearless…" |
Descaro's brown eyes wandered upwards, scanning the red cliffs above him with proud curiosity. The sun-baked sandstone rose many horse-lengths above his head, and a band of blue sky was visible between the cliffs above. The path was relatively thin, lined with broken rocks and sandy soil. A few dried shrubs grew along the sides. A small stream, a branch of of the main Castovar River, ran down the center of the canyon.
The Castovar Path, which was the widest part of the canyon, was still a ways ahead. That part of the canyon had the main river in it, and the canyon was open enough there that a fairly wide path had been worn along the river.
This side path was much less noticeable, and although Descaro had been through it many times, a less experienced horse would be completely lost by now. The afternoon sun beat down with a vengeance, and the stallion flicked his tail, hot and uncomfortable under his gray coat.
Descaro glanced over his shoulder at Ronokoro, assessing his new Beta silently. Ronokoro had only been traveling with Descaro for about a week, but Descaro had to admit he was impressed with the Percheron stallion. Ronokoro was everything he had been looking for in a Beta.
When Descaro first ran across Ronokoro, they had almost immediately set off, traveling north across the mountains and not staying in any one place for more than a single night. At the Needle they had turned southeast, and were now weaving their way through the less-traveled paths that made up the maze known as the Lost Canyons. It was a fitting name for this confusing, desolate landscape.
Descaro had come across some signs of bears, but not of wolves or cougars. The stallion knew that they were still around, but he could not pinpoint any of them.
They hadn't run into any other horses yet either, but Descaro hoped that would change soon. In order to call what he was doing "forming a herd", he needed to convince a few more horses to join.
"We're getting closer," Descaro said after a minute, his voice low and friendly. He flicked his gray ears forward, blowing air through his nostrils with a gentle whoosh. Somewhere ahead, the faint sounds of running water could be heard. The stallion lifted a large hoof and placed it down on the sandy soil firmly, quickening his pace slightly. His legs straightened out just a bit, and he lifted his tail and head. He pranced forward, feeling rather young and colt-like. He had half a mind to give a small, excited buck, but he decided against it. If anyone was hanging out at the river, he didn't want to make a bad first impression. If his new herd--Reyano--was to be taken seriously, it's new Lord had to act accordingly. template by Magpie of Adoxography

The towering, layered red rock on either side of him made him feel protected, as if no one would be able to harm the two horses who made their way through them. Their heavy, thick hooves made clipping, clopping sounds on the warm sandstone, worn smooth in the center of the canyon by the small river that snaked its way through confidently. His head bobbed slightly with every other step, his long mane swaying. He flicked an ear at a small rock that tumbled down the side of the canyon, falling to the floor with a dry, brittle sound. The sun's warmth fell over the two horses like water, soaking them past the fur and into their skin, they were swimming in this heat.
"We're getting closer," Descaro, or, Lord Descaro, said. He picked up his pace a bit, his mood seeming high. Ronokoro picked up his pace as well, matching it to Lord Descaro's and letting out a small nicker as he started to move his legs a little faster and pick them up a little higher. This news was music to his ears. While he was not eager to get out of this canyon, he was quite enjoying the view from down here, he was excited to move on with creating a herd. This would be his second herd, and he would be a beta!
"This walk has been quite undisturbed," not wanting to remain silent, he said this, referring to the fact that cougars were on the prowl here, and neither of them had felt the effects of dehydration or the hot, hot sun. In fact, this walk had been pleasantly… well, pleasant. Ronokoro was happy that the walk to their future, you could say, had been undisturbed. Perhaps it was a sign, a sign that this was meant to be.

"This walk has been quite undisturbed," Ronokoro observed, and Descaro nodded in agreement. He didn't mind the journey, but he was anxious to see if anyone had realized he was forming a herd, and now sought to join it. He kept a steady pace, however, setting each hoof down with a firm patience.
The sounds of running water grew closer, until it was nearly overwhelming to his sensitive ears. Finally, the pair came into the open, and Descaro saw the river. The Castovar was about three horse-lengths across in this spot, not particularly fast-moving but not sluggish either. They were coming in from the south side of the river, and so to his right was the entrance to the Lost Canyons.
The dappled equine turned with interest toward the Flatlands he could see between the canyon walls, and scanned the whole area curiously. There, he thought with excitement, his sharp brown eyes catching the form of a black and white paint. He watched her from the other side of the river, still quite far away, for a moment. His heart swelled with pride. Somehow, word of his new herd must have spread, and there was a horse here, waiting, Descaro assumed, for the Lord of the herd.
As he watched, the mare reared, letting a shrill whinny out. Her impatience was clear, but that didn't dampen his spirits. The Lord trotted over to the river, not hesitating to enter it. The current came three-quarters of the way up his legs, but he could touch the sandy river bottom at all times. The stallion bunched his strong muscles together and pulled himself onto the opposite shore, shaking his coat out and waiting for Ronokoro to follow.

As soon as the river came into Ronokoro's sight, he changed his mind. He thought that he wouldn't mind staying in this canyon for forever, but as he saw the exit so soon ahead of him, he realized that he definitely wouldn't mind leaving, either. The obnoxiously loud river came into earshot well before it came into view, and when it did, the entrance to the Borders became apparent as well. Descaro searched the land, and Ronokoro followed his gaze to a black and white piebald mare, who let out a shrill, high-pitched whinny of what he assumed was impatience. An excitement began to fill Ronokoro's hooves, urging him to go forward at a mighty gallop and meet this mare as soon as possible. He was really going to assist in starting and leading a herd.
As his Lord made his descent into the river water, Ronokoro followed behind, the silvery liquid a good refresher to finally bring his conscious out of those cramped walls he had just been between. Descaro shook his coat and waited for Rono on the shore, though he only followed a couple of seconds behind. As he trotted up to Descaro's side, his eyes dark eyes gleamed as he thought of their future.

"Fate loves the fearless…" |
The echoes of hoofbeats rang through the canyons, a familiar song to the Reyano Lord. The sun-crusted stone and rush of the river relaxed the stallion, and gave him the confidence he needed to feel at home again. Descaro lifted his tail higher and continued on at a steady trot. He glanced behind him, checking to make sure the two foals were keeping up. He couldn't expect them to do everything, and it was unfair to treat them as adults. If they got lost, it would be his fault, and his alone.
Comforted by the sight of the foals, Descaro continued on, racing the afternoon sun westward. After an hour or two of trotting he stopped by the side of the Castovar and waited for the new herd members to group around him. "The canyons here are the protection against our foes. Reyano is protected on all sides by natural barriers, and these barriers are lethal. In this herd you must learn to understand that you are not the enemy of nature: we are all part of nature. If you respect this, you can learn to be humble about what you can and cannot handle. These canyons are deadly, but only if you are not humble enough to know when to rest."
Descaro glanced upward toward the setting sun, and down the long canyon path, which was now hidden in shadow. "Predators hide during the day when it is hot, and come out to hunt during dusk. We are going to stop here for a few hours, and then continue on more slowly around midnight. There is green grass here by the river, and you can rest. Deziree, Boundless, I expect you both to stick close to the group, unless you want to become prey to a cougar." The Lord glanced at Jasper. "Boundless is your responsibility," Descaro ordered. "Deziree, I'll be keeping an eye on you. Everyone else, keep together and be careful."
After his short speech, Descaro circled the group, his dark eyes scanning the cliffs. They were a large group and not likely to be attacked, but Deziree and Boundless were still in danger. Coming full circle around the group, Descaro stopped beside Deziree. "I expect you to stay by my side for the next few hours. No matter where I go, you follow, unless I directly tell you otherwise. Understand?"
The Lord went back to watching the cliffs while waiting for her answer. He didn't plan on moving--he wanted Deziree to get a chance to eat and rest, but he would not let himself be distracted until the group was safely out of the canyons. Ronokoro would be back before they began moving again, Descaro hoped, and between them and Jasper they should be safe. But it was never a good idea to expect anything less than the worse. Reyano was dangerous, and that was simply a fact of life here. template by Magpie of Adoxography

It had taken an immense amount of self patience to ward herself away from the river's edge. The foal wasn't really hungry, but a dry pile of grass still currently made it's way through her stomach, all the food she could find after leaving her mother. The stuff was literally the equivalent of eating twigs off of a tree, but she had managed to swallow down a few dry mouthfuls. On the contrary, the mare had found no water sources whatsoever, and now as she walked alongside a great temptation Deziree fought not to lose her composure. No, she would wait until they stopped, and with that determination she would pin back her ears in concentration and continue forward. A few more hours passed, the sun was setting, and still a pleasurable sloshing sound tugged at her dry tongue. Finally, the Lord stopped, awaiting the gathering of all the new members. While he went on about the dangers of the canyons, Deziree's brown hues were evidently glued onto the water. She half listened to what he was saying, but took no part in letting it process. " Predators hide during the day when it is hot, and come out to hunt during dusk. We are going to stop here for a few hours, and then continue on more slowly around midnight. There is green grass here by the river -" without another word the foal would begin a graceful walk towards the water's edge, again using a great amount of self-concentration to avoid running toward it. Before her lips could kiss the trickling liquid, though, her name was called and she would allow a single ear to rotate backwards. All Descaro had to say was the mention of staying close to the group and herself being his responsibility. Deziree savored the taste of a cool liquid running down her parched throat, feeling the water move effortlessly into her belly. Within a few minutes the mare felt back to normal, and as such she would turn her body only to find the huge Lord at her side. Again it took control to resist flinching, but of course only out of surprise. " I expect you to stay by my side for the next few hours. No matter where I go, you follow, unless I directly tell you otherwise. Understand?" he would say. It was strange really, being ordered around by anyone other than her mother or her old harem. The little fireball could hardly resist smart-mouthing the Lord, but then it was truly hard for her to adjust to the loss of her harem and her mother's death. What worse could a foal experience in their life besides abuse afterwards? The female gazed warily at Descaro with that thought in mind, but she would nod her head in understanding once. The mare then let her curious gaze stray to Boundless once again, eyeing him like a oddly shaped rock out in the middle of these canyons; something of little interest but enough to catch her attention (assuming that Boundless will be here). How was it that the two of them were two completely different horses, him timid and shy while she had a strong head on her shoulders. And he was the boy here! Curiosity tugged at her to question his past and perhaps solve that mystery, but it was against her will to approach him on her own. No, he's none of my business and I will take no part in conversation with him! she would think selfishly to herself, closing her eyes as she jerked her head away. Deziree took an angry mouthful of grass, why she was annoyed being a mystery to even herself. As she grazed quietly, her eyes would stray toward Descaro occasionally, watching to see if he was motioning to move. ~Exit to Hidden Valley~

After literally hours of trotting through the orange walls of the canyons, the grey Lord ahead of her stopped hear the river. Robin flicked one of her ears back to him to listen as he explained respecting the canyons, and predators at night, while she made her way down to the river's edge and extended her neck out over and into the water, lapping up the cool droplets until her thirst was quenched. She wasn't dumb, she knew that predators would attack at night, but she was still grateful for the rest stop. Moving slightly away from the side of the edge of the river, she bent her head down, grazing on the greener grass by the edge of the river. It wasn't as sweet as the grass she was used to eating, but it did hold more flavor than the practical sticks she ate before she entered the canyon. While she waited for Descaro's signal to move on, she would continue to tear the greenery out of the canyon floor. Lord Descaro Deziree Jasper Imani Boundless -Time Skip- --Exit to Hidden Valley--

BETA RONOKORO | The sun was setting now, hanging so low and heavy and saturated in the sky you may think it was about to fall behind the horizon. Instead, it slowly dips lower and lower, taking its time and throwing golden ribbons of light across the landscape that rolled over the rough hills like an ocean current. However, in the canyons, the light struggles to weasel through to the bottom. It gets darker in the canyons much faster than at the surface, as what little light makes it through is cast a shadow upon by the steep rock walls of the canyons. The landscape is typically monotone with its gray and orange hues, but Dawn and Dusk add color; a brilliant spectrum of reds and purples and yellows and whites that imbue the Reyano lands with these such colors. The ground is rough, as per usual, under-hoof. As the sun disappears, the heat that was formerly so prominent in the ground now cools down, and the nighttime air begins to settle thick on the coats of horses. The herd comes into sight, the many colors and patterns of the horses a welcome sight for the Beta, the most welcoming of all being his Lord's. As he passes through the herd, the mare at his side, Ronokoro merely gazes at all horses, eyes lingering a bit on Jasper and his brother, Boundless. It had been a while since he had seen such a 'brotherhood.' However his black eyes are swift to return to his Lord, and soon he stands before the dominant male. He gestures towards the unnamed mare at his side, though he suspects she will have enough common sense to tell the Lord, at least, her name. "This is the only horse to have come," he says, looking at whoever speaks next, whether it be the mare or Lord Descaro. Mia Lord Descaro --Time Skip-- --Exit to Hidden Valley-- |

The Reyano Lord stood solidly as footsteps began to echo through the dark canyons, his dark eyes scanning the eastern cliffs. When Ronokoro appeared from the shadows, a small mare at his side, Descaro dipped his head in greeting to his Beta, but his eyes were scanning the new mare. "This is the only horse to have come," Ronokoro reported.
"Very well," Descaro said. "There will be time for introductions later. Right now I want to get out of these canyons." Signaling for Deziree to follow, Descaro circled around to the front of the group.
"It is time to move on. We are very close to the mountains, and once we are there we should be much safer. Follow me. Beta Ronokoro will take up the rear." With that, the gray stallion turned and trotted off, glancing back only once to make sure Deziree was still by his side.

As the darkness was coming over the land, she struggled to keep pace without limping really bad. The bruised heel was causing more trouble when she would land on rocks she couldn't see. Her small ears had been pinned shortly after they left the borders to move deeper into the claimed land. Her tail was constantly flicking back and forth in annoyance from her hoof. With the sun disappearing so did any warmth it lent to the air. As the large dappled stallion led the way past other horses, she kept her head up, trying to avoid showing her hoof was bothering her. Most of the other horses were very colorful, her coat was very pale in comparison.
"This is the only horse to have come." The small mare said nothing but waited to hear what the large stallion would have to say. He didn't seem mad or even demand her name or anything. Instead he said it was time to move. As the stud turned and headed to move his herd, she pinned her ears a little bit. He picked up a trot to lead them. With a small snort she dropped her head a little and picked up her pace to keep up with the others. She stuck to the outside of the others, not sure who anyone really was other than the beta stallion.
