Here is a definition of common terms used for horses.Species:Horse - An equine 14.2 hands tall or higher. Pony - An equine less than 14.2 hands tall. *One hand = four inches*Horse Age Names:Stallion - A male horse 3 years old or older. Gelding - A castrated male horse 3 years old or older. Mare - A female horse 3 years old or older. Colt - A male horse between the ages of 0-3. Filly - A female horse between the ages of 0-3. Yearling - A horse of either gender between the ages of 1-2. Foal - A horse of either gender between the ages of 0-1. Body Parts: Gaits: Walk - A slow four-beat gait. Trot - A steady, jog-like two-beat gait. Canter/Lope - A quick, flowing three-beat gait. Gallop - A fast, running four-beat gait.
