Here is a list of the most common horse coat colors.
Terms:
*Points - Refers to the ears, lower legs, mane and tail.
**Dorsal Stripe - A line of darker color hair running along the spine of the horse.
Solid Colors:
Black - Coat, mane and tail are all black.
Bay - Coat is brown (can range from tan to dark brown) with black points*.
Chestnut - Coat, mane and tail are all brown (can range from a light flaxen tan to dark liver).
Gray - The coat, mane and tail are gray (can range from white to a dark steel color).
Fleabitten Gray - The coat is a light gray, flecked with small reddish dots. The mane and tail are light gray.
Grullo - A dark silver coat with a black dorsal stripe**. Mane and tail are black.
Dun - Coat is tan with black points* and a black dorsal stripe**.
Red Dun - A light reddish coat with a dark red dorsal stripe**. Mane and tail are dark red.
Buckskin - A light tan coat with black points*.
Palomino - A light golden coat with a white or light cream mane and tail.
Cremello/Perlino/Smoky Cream - An off-white color of light cream. The skin is pink, not gray.
Blue Roan - A black horse with its coat interspersed with white hairs, creating a blueish-gray color. The head, mane, tail, and lower legs are solid black.
Bay Roan - A bay horse with its coat interspersed with white hairs, creating a brown-and-white mix of hairs. The head is solid brown, and the mane, tail, and lower legs are solid black.
Red Roan/Strawberry Roan - A chestnut horse with its coat interspersed with white hairs, creating a red-and-white mix of hairs. The head, mane, tail, and lower legs are solid brown.

White Markings:
Paint/Pinto:
Tobiano - Large, solid white splotches with curved edges. The splotches cross over the spine, and the mane and tail will be partially white. The head is a solid color, without white, and the lower legs are solid white.
Overo - Smaller, solid white splotches with sharp, jagged edges. The splotches do not cover the spine, and the mane and tail will be a solid color. The head may have white on it, and the lower legs generally will not.
Tovero - A horse with more white than color. It seems that there are splotches of color on the coat rather than splotches of white.
Appaloosa:
Blanket - There is a single, large white splotch across the horse's rump. The splotch can be small or can stretch up the back, but is centered around the base of the tail. The splotch may have spots of color inside it.
Leopard - A white horse with medium-sized red or black dots all over its body.
Varnish Roan - White hairs intersperse with the coat color, covering the entire horse in a mix of color and white.
