Information about horse behavior in the wild.
* Horses are herd animals, and do not like living alone.
*A typical herd consists of one stallion, and two or more mares and their foals.
* When a foal reaches the age of about two, they are chased from their birth herd to prevent inbreeding. Fillies will join another herd, while colts will generally roam in bands (2-10 young male horses) until they can begin their own herd.
* Each herd has one lead stallion and one lead mare. The stallion protects the herd, and breeds with the mares. The lead mare is the boss, moving the herd to find food, water, shelter, and safety.
* A strict social hierarchy is maintained at all times, with the lead mare at the top, then the lead stallion, the rest of the mares, the foals, and the yearlings.
* Horses have a very strong "fight or flight" response, and are prey animals. The interior of a herd is the safest place to be, and as punishment horses may be banished from the herd for a certain period of time, and sent to the outskirts of the herd, where life is much more stressful and dangerous.
This is how harems should be roleplayed. Herds will have a different, more complicated and slightly less realistic hierarchy, however.
